• A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds.
• It is estimated that between 60-85% of child fatalities due to maltreatment are not recorded as such on death certificates.
• The USA spends $258 million daily as a direct or indirect result of child abuse, neglect and maltreatment.
• In 2007, an estimated 794,000 children were determined to be victims of abuse or neglect. Of these children, 59.0% were neglected, 10.8% were physically abused, and 7.6% were sexually abused.
• About 30% of abused and neglected children will later abuse their own children.
• As a result of child abuse, 77% of child fatalities were under the age of 4
• 81% of families with reported cases of child abuse, neglect and maltreatment were involved in alcohol & substance abuse.
• Over 60% of people in drug rehabilitation centers report being abused or neglected as a child.
• 90% of child sexual abuse victims know the perpetrator in some way; 68% are abused by family members.
• Child abuse occurs at every socioeconomic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education.

Did you know? Child Self-Injury…
• An estimated two million Americans purposely cut or burn themselves.
• More than half of self injurers are victims of abuse, and most report emotionally abusive or neglectful childhoods.
• The average self injurer begins at age fourteen and continues with increasing severity into their late twenties.
• 90% of self injurers begin cutting as teenagers.
• Self injury is prevalent in all races and economic backgrounds
• Although most self injurers are female, up to 40% are male.
• Most people who self injure are not trying to commit suicide, instead using self injury as a coping mechanism.
• Self injury does become an addiction as it helps a person feel better for a short period of time.
• Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among children between 10 and 14 (184 in 2007).
• Suicide is the third leading cause of death among people between 15 and 24 (4,140 in 2007).

Did you know? Missing Children…
• The total number of children who were missing from their caretakers in 1999 is estimated to be 1,315,600.
• The number of children reported missing in 1999 was estimated to be 797,500, equaling 11.4 children per 1,000 in the U.S. population.
• It is estimated there were 115 kidnappings by a stranger or slight acquaintance. 40% of the children were killed. 4% were hadn't been recovered.
• An estimated 58,200 children were victims of nonfamily abduction.
• Teenagers were the most frequent victims of both kidnappings and nonfamily abductions.
• Nearly half of all child victims of kidnappings and nonfamily abductions were sexually assaulted by the perpetrator.
• 44% of family abducted children were younger than age 6.
• 43% of family abducted children were abducted by their biological father, and 25% were abducted by their biological mother.
• Of the family abducted children, 46% were gone less than a week, 21% were gone 1 month or more. 6% had not yet returned.
• Of 1,682,900 runaway/thrownaway children, it's estimated 71% could have been endangered.
• Youth ages 15–17 made up two-thirds of the youth with runaway/thrownaway episodes.
