Navy petty officer pleads guilty to child abuse
SAN DIEGO — A Navy petty officer suspected in the death of his 3-month-old daughter has pleaded guilty to felony child abuse in San Diego.
The San Diego Union-Tribune (http://bit.ly/tBReMg) says 29-year-old Steven Davinger admitted he willfully inflicted unjustifiable pain on his daughter Aziya in September and October 2009.
Police say the child died of infections caused by her injuries. An autopsy ruled her October 2009 death a homicide.
Aziya’s mother, 23-year-old Sara Davinger, and a babysitter, 28-year-old Thomas Stevenson, have each pleaded guilty to one count of felony child abuse. They have not yet been sentenced.
The Davingers were both enlisted in the Navy and were arrested March 10.
Steven Davinger is expected to be sentenced to 21 years in prison in January.
