CLEVELAND — Their red berets are instantly recognizable, especially after the international news stories on the homecomings of Gina, Michelle and Amanda.

The Guardian Angels are an all-volunteer group, started in New York in 1979.

The Cleveland chapter has 27 members, and plays a role in keeping missing persons cases in the public’s mind, and has done so for many years.

The members are also trained in safety, domestic violence awareness and community education.

They patrol streets, assist with traffic control, and hold summer camps for at-risk youth.

For members, it’s simply a passion and calling to serve the community.

Members each give upwards of 30 hours of volunteer time a month.

When Gina DeJesus returned home after her nine years in captivity, the Guardian Angels helped shield her and her family from prying eyes.

The cause of missing persons, and human trafficking is one they want to take beyond basic community service.

This summer, the Angels will travel to Toledo (the city with the second highest rate of human trafficking in the country) and meet with Representative Marcy Kaptur.

The Guardian Angels will address the need to strengthen Amber Alert response.

The Guardian Angels are recruiting new members.

Those interested can call Luis Gonzalez at (216)310-5701.

Members must be willing to come to training classes, and pass a background check, plus volunteer 30 hours a month to community service.

The men and women of the Guardian Angels have earned the respect of local police, and neighborhood families. Their only hope is to serve even more.

They also plan to return to the tornado-damages areas of Oklahoma for this second time this summer, dropping off donations.

Those who wish to donate can drop off diapers, wipes, non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, flash lights, batteries, etc., in Cleveland at St. Augustine Catholic Parish oN West 14th Street; or in Lorain at Inglesia De Dios Ebenezer, 3660 Globe Avenue.
