Huntington mother charged with child neglect
HUNTINGTON — A mother of two children was arrested Monday after authorities said she not only purchased but used drugs in the presence of her children.
Megan Michelle Cooper, 25, of Huntington, was charged with felony child neglect creating risk of injury when West Virginia State Police were dispatched to her residence along Barker Drive Monday evening for a check welfare call.
The criminal complaint filed in Cabell County Magistrate Court showed officers came in contact with Cooper, who allowed officers to search her residence, where they found drug paraphernalia hidden under a mattress in her bedroom.
The complaint states Cooper admitted to troopers she had an addiction to Oxycodone and that she had taken her children, a 7-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy, with her to purchase pills earlier during the day. She also told troopers she purchases pills between three and four times each week, according to the complaint.
Cooper’s children were placed in the custody of relatives prior to her arrest. She was incarcerated at Western Regional Jail on a $10,000 bond.
A hearing in the matter is set for 10:30 a.m. June 15.
